Looking at your statement:
There is a M/S KB article on the subject (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323308) and suggests a registry change, but my customer doesn't want to do that. The registry change does fix the problem.
it looks like this is not a CR / SAP issue(?). The solution is provided by MS for an MS issue in general. Unfortunately, the issue affects CR also. No other solution or a fix to fix a possible MS issue...
Your customer has no option other than to relent and accept the MS recommended changes.
